What We Aim For
The Faraway Fairways portfolio of Corporate Golf Days or Weekend Breaks in Scotland are more subtle in their selection and appointment than might be immediately obvious
We need to establish something that is world class. The golf needs to stand up to scrutiny, but we also need a course(s) that will take a large party. This usually means offering a 36 hole day on the Saturday, and an 18 hole course on the Sunday at a more prestigious venue
We also need a good hotel, with the required capacity, and that is within close proximity of the golf course(s). We don’t want to be wasting too much playing time travelling between venues
We need a travel hub nearby that can reliably deliver us to our destination from a variety of incoming locations
Finally, we might also seek out an option that has a bit more going on in the background than the golf
St Andrews with Kingsbarns
- Duration – 3 nights (Fri to Sun) – 2 nights might be possible with favourable flight schedule
- Golf – 36 holes Torrance with Kittocks (Sat) 18 holes Kingsbarns (Sun)
- Hotel – Fairmont, St Andrews (5-star)
- Airport – Edinburgh (90 mins away)
- Non-Airport mileage – 10 miles
We would probably regard this as the best compromise option.
Any golfers who wished to take their chance in the St Andrews Old Course ballot should be able to do so for Saturday. We would anticipate about 1 in 7 winning
St Andrews town is 5 mins away by taxi and could easily support an evening out without feeling weak
Gleneagles
- Duration – 3 nights (Fri to Sun) – 2 nights might be possible with favourable flight schedule
- Golf – 36 holes Kings with Queens courses (Sat) 18 holes Centenary Course (Sun)
- Hotel – Gleneagles Hotel (5-star)
- Airport – Glasgow or Edinburgh (60 mins away)
- Non-Airport mileage – 0 miles
We would probably regard this as the most luxurious option. We are likely to need to stay within the estate however. Gleneagles might be on a main road (the A9) but its actually relatively secluded
Dalmahoy/ Edinburgh
- Duration – 3 nights (Fri to Sun)
- Golf – 36 holes Dalmahoy West and East courses (Sat) North Berwick (Sun)
- Hotel – Dalmahoy Hotel (4-star)
- Airport – Edinburgh (15 mins away)
- Non-Airport mileage – 50 miles (North Berwick)
North Berwick represents the ‘class’ in the golf, but the club will only allow visitors to play on Sunday afternoons. We will need to reserve this about 18 months in advance if we want to line up sequential times at North Berwick
With Edinburgh just 25 mins to the north east of us, Dalmahoy is going to have some quite obvious ‘social’ options and opportunities elsewhere in the evening!
Portmarnock/ Dublin
- Duration – 3 nights (Fri to Sun)
- Golf – 36 holes Jameson Links, Portmarnock and Island Club (Sat) Portmarnock GC (Sun)
- Hotel – Portmarnock Hotel (4-star)
- Airport – Dublin (20 mins away)
- Non-Airport mileage – 40 miles (Island)
The Portmarnock Golf Club represents the ‘class’ in the golf, but the club will only allow visitors to play on Sunday afternoons. We will need to reserve this about 18 months in advance if we want to line up sequential tee times
With Dublin just 30 mins to the south, Portmarnock might be the most ‘social’ of the various options. There are potential distractions and opportunities elsewhere in the evening!
Carnoustie
- Duration – 3 nights (Fri to Sun)
- Golf – 36 holes Buddon Links, and Burnside Course (Sat) Championship Course (Sun)
- Hotel – Carnoustie Hotel (4-star)
- Airport – Edinburgh (2 hrs away) Aberdeen (1 hr 45 mins)
- Non-Airport mileage – 0 miles (Island)
We would expect Carnoustie to be the least expensive. It would represent the most demanding golf examination. It would also have the fewest distractions going on outside of the golf.

Stays in St Andrews, Carnoustie, Gleneagles and Dalmahoy would be able to consider taking a shot at the St Andrews Old Course, but this is likely to be confined to a Saturday application only.
If we’re able to land on Friday, then we could make this the subject of a full days attempt
This is just about possible provided you have a bag ‘ready to go’, the ability to use a flexible date airline ticket, and an airport with a route to at least London in relatively close proximity to you
Anyone contesting a St Andrews Old Course tee-time for a Saturday, would get this result at about 11.30 EST on Thursday.
If you can fly out that same evening, arriving in Scotland on Friday morning, then you could probably make this work and convert your ballot into a de facto guaranteed play

We don't need to make this an ordeal by 101 filtering questions! In reality there are probably little more than half a dozen things we need to know to build out a proposal. The guidance below might help you frame answers
Duration - usually best expressed as a range up to a maximum
Time of year - can be anything from a specific date range to a named season
Travel class - Faraway Fairways uses 'Luxury', 'Premier' or 'Affordable' for generic purposes. You might choose to reference the international 'star' rating system. We're only looking for something to help steer us into the right sector
Self drive or hired driver - In broad terms, self driving is normally less expensive, and much more flexible, but some folk just don't want to do it
Must play courses/ must do places - a few name checks is all that's needed
